5 Redenen Waarom Je Wimperextensions Niet Zo Lang Blijven Zitten als Verwacht

5 Reasons Why Your Eyelash Extensions Don't Last as Long as Expected

You have just had a beautiful, full set of eyelash extensions applied and are enjoying a radiant look. But after just a few days, you notice the lashes falling out one by one, even though you were expecting three to four weeks of wear. Sound familiar?

Nothing is as frustrating as eyelash extensions that shed prematurely. The longevity (retention) of eyelash extensions depends on a combination of factors: from your daily care to your biological eyelash cycle. In this article, we discuss the 5 most common reasons why eyelash extensions fall out quickly and what you can do immediately to prevent it.

1. Use of Oil-Based Skincare and Makeup

This is by far the number one culprit for lash loss.

  • The problem: Most lash adhesives are broken down by oils, fats, and silicones. Do you use a cleansing oil, a greasy eye cream, waterproof makeup, or a creamy foundation around your eyes? Then these oils slowly creep towards the base of the lashes and dissolve the adhesive bond.
  • The solution:
    • Use only oil-free facial cleansers and micellar water.
    • Apply eye creams and serums carefully to the bone around the eyes, and avoid the mobile eyelid and the lash line.
    • Skip waterproof eye makeup.

2. Your Sleeping Position: Friction on Cotton Pillowcases

Did you know that your sleeping habits have a direct influence on how long your lashes last?

  • The problem: If you are a stomach or side sleeper, your face presses against the pillow for hours. The constant friction and pressure cause lashes to bend, kink, or be mechanically pulled out. Do you notice lashes falling out faster on one eye? That is almost always your favorite side to sleep on!
  • The solution:
    • Try to sleep on your back as much as possible.
    • Switch to a satin or silk pillowcase. Satin creates significantly less friction than rough cotton, allowing your lashes to glide smoothly over the fabric.
    • If necessary, use a special 3D sleep mask with cutouts for your eyes.

3. Not Cleaning Enough (Fear of Getting Them Wet)

Many people think they should touch or wash their eyelash extensions as little as possible to prevent shedding. However, this has the exact opposite effect!

  • The problem: Your eyelids produce natural sebum, sweat, and dead skin cells daily. If you do not wash your lashes thoroughly, this grease accumulates around the lash base. This buildup compromises the adhesive and increases the risk of bacterial infections (such as blepharitis).
  • The solution:
    • Wash your lashes 2 to 3 times a week with a special oil-free lash shampoo (lash foam) and a soft brush.
    • Rinse with lukewarm water, gently pat dry with a tissue, and only brush them once they are 100% dry.

4. The Natural Eyelash Growth Cycle

Sometimes the cause of lash loss is not your care routine, but simply the natural functioning of your body.

  • The problem: Everyone naturally loses 2 to 5 of their own lash hairs per day. Because an extension is attached to a natural lash hair, the extension falls out along with it as soon as the natural hair has completed its growth cycle (telogen phase).
  • How do you recognize this? If there is a small white/natural hair attached to the base of the fallen-out extension, this is a sign of healthy natural lash turnover. Is there no natural hair attached? Then the adhesive bond has come loose prematurely.
  • Seasonal Shedding & Hormones: In spring and autumn, or during hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or thyroid changes), lash shedding can temporarily accelerate.

5. Mistakes in the First 24 Hours & Exposure to Extreme Heat

The first few hours after the treatment largely determine the success of the overall bond duration.

  • The problem: Unless a quick-setting UV system or an instant bonder was used, traditional lash glue requires 24 hours to cure completely. If you come into contact with water, heavy perspiration, a sauna, or a hot steam oven during that period, the adhesive structure weakens permanently (shock curing).
  • The solution:
    • Keep your lashes dry for the first 24 hours and avoid intense exercise or hot baths.
    • After that, be careful with direct, intense heat sources (such as a hairdryer close to the face, open flames, or steam from an opened oven); extreme heat can cause the curl to drop and synthetic fibers to melt.

Causes and Quick Solutions in Brief

Cause

Effect

Quick Solution

Oil-based skincare

Glue softens and dissolves

Switch to 100% oil-free cleansers

Stomach/side sleeping

Friction pulls lashes out

Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Not washing lashes

Sebum buildup breaks down glue

Wash 2–3x per week with lash shampoo

Lash growth cycle

Natural daily shedding

Regular fill-in treatment after 2–3 weeks

Premature moisture/steam

Glue doesn't cure optimally

Keep dry and cool for the first 24 hours

Summary

You largely hold the key to long retention yourself. By avoiding oils, washing your lashes regularly and hygienically with lash foam, sleeping on silk, and respecting your natural growth cycle, you will enjoy a full, well-groomed look to the maximum!
